Sure...having fresh paint, newly revealed brick walls, and all new lighting can really spruce up a place, but until the floors are finished, everything seems unfinished.

Remember what we started with?

And then...
Floor prep work began! We popped those tiles off over a year ago and the layers of dust, saw dust, dirt and plaster have been protecting those original wooden floors all this time. Once we vacuumed, and vacuumed, aaannnnddddd vacuumed that dust up, we were ready to sand it and then vacuum once more. And because we didn't have overhead lighting yet, and we work at our regular jobs during the day, most of this was done at night by spotlights. Challenging to say the least! But where there is a will...eh, you know the rest!

We chose to stain with a dark cherry to help hide the flaws and it turned out way better than expected. On each side of the main floor by the walls, there are lots of patches with plywood that we really could do nothing about. So we stained them and hoped for the best and they turned out great...matched the hardwood in color, even if not in design. The floor is dusty now again from our continued work, but will be shined up soon for our Grand Opening! We can't wait!

Oh, and as for the rest of the flooring in other spaces...yep...they are painted! Black with lots of shine...and they look great! And here is a sneak peek at our women's restroom floor...
We just had to throw in some chevron flair somewhere!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2130529679976856277.post-33779295064003356752013-07-22T19:18:00.001-07:002013-07-22T19:18:22.842-07:00Up and Down: We have Stairways!

We could always get upstairs to our second story and to our mezzanine level on a separate staircase, but was it pleasant and safe? Not a chance. Here's what we started with:

Annnnnndddddddd...now look what we have...Ta Da!

It's hard to believe that is the same staircase but it has been widened, steps have been lengthened up to code, the bannister is sturdy and safe and now it is open, so you can see out into the big area below.

Our mezzanine steps were hidden in the back in a windy path up the half story, but noooowwwww....

we have a lovely path up to the half floor straight from the main floor, where you could house a DJ, a bar, extra seating, a VIP area, whatever you want! And this will be your view (minus some lumber, ladders, a few tools, and dust everywhere):

To create the railing overlooking the main area, we got creative and used what we had. There was a large stack of these huge window frames with the glass still intact left in the building when we purchased it. Lee and his dad put these together and built a sturdy frame around them and voila...we have a unique railing! Since the area is definitely smaller and more closed in than anywhere else, having the see-through railing will help open it up more.

Exciting things are happening starting on November 2nd! Check back for more details!!!

This old building of ours begged to be rid of its many layers on the walls, and we listened! After ripping the top layer of painted plywood off, we slowly but surely started picking away at the plaster that covered the entire area of the downstairs' walls.

BEFORE PIC: Lovely plywood that covered those beautiful hidden walls.

After a day's work, the ladies got the bottom half of one side off. It was beautiful!

We, however, were not.
Plaster dust is horrible and by the end of the day, there was plaster dust all over us, our cars, our homes, and in places we didn't even know existed. But, the work must continue!

The boys finished off the rest of the plaster and then the detail work began. Every inch of those walls had to be scrubbed with a wire brush to remove the remaining plaster and to clean the bricks off. You can see in the picture below that it was well worth it. We had scrubbed the bottom half and boy, did those red bricks shine!

Jessica finally wised up and bought a heavy duty mask, because that dust is no joke!!

Lee hard at work, making that plaster fly!

The things left to do for the brick are to coat the walls in a protective layer to shore the brick up and to decide what to do in the spaces in the brick that were found and voila...another task complete!

As you can see below, we have already had "customers" taking advantage of our beautiful canvas for photographs. This was a singing group called Earmark Trio that was doing a photoshoot downtown one Sunday when we were there. They took a few shots inside. We have also had another booked photoshoot for someone else that wanted an exposed brick, unfinished look and it worked out great for them. So, pass the word...we are not only good for events, but photo shoots as well!
Thanks for visiting and checking us out! We are getting even more exposure in VIP Jackson Magazine. Stay tuned for that update!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2130529679976856277.post-8180987032641009132013-06-02T06:14:00.000-07:002013-06-02T06:14:39.256-07:00Fun Finds! As the boys had to do some work underneath the building, they also came across pieces of history that belong to the building (besides finding dead animal carcasses, dead spiders, and other creepy, crawly things, living or dead).

First off were these signs that have the name of the very first store that this building was created for in the late 1890s.

Along with many pieces of these signs were lots of coal, a pipe, an old spittoon, a Lucky Strike cigarette box and a remnants of a shirt that was labeled "O'Bryan". After some research, we found this to be the name of the manufacturer that later became Duck Head. Here is a little excerpt from Wikipedia:

The Duck Head brand was founded in 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee by George and Joe O'Bryan, two brothers who were buying surplus U.S. Army tent material. The material was a heavy canvas known as "duck", and the brothers began making work pants and shirts out of the strong material.

Also found was an insurance policy from 1936 from Warmath & Dunlap of Humboldt signed by K.L. Dunlap for when the store was Thweatt Bros. Below are a few pics from the policy...
In addition to finding odd things, we have uncovered spaces in the walls. While exposing the brick, an archway was found that oddly enough was covered in wallpaper (remember, this was all under plaster). It looks like it could go all the way through to the building next door, but it stops. About 1.5 feet above the arch is another space that contained a flue and it also had a metal drawer that pulls out that would have contained soot. Above that is a round hole that an exhaust pipe would fit in. So was it a fire stove? A secret entryway? Who knows, but we must find something cool to do with the space! Suggestions are welcome!
Old structures are fun, as long as you can muster up the patience and the stamina to get through it all!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2130529679976856277.post-66562935899668232182013-05-27T18:26:00.000-07:002013-05-27T19:12:53.068-07:00Exterior...95% CompleteAfter too long of a hiatus from the blog, we are back to report on our progress! We are so appreciative of all of those that ask us about the building and send encouragement our way. It means more to us than you could ever know!

Our exterior progress has continued and we are almost complete on the outside...so close we can taste it! It will be so nice to check something off our list as a fully completed item, that we may just have to have a party to celebrate. At least we have a place to do it, right? As long as we don't mind piles of lumber and dust everywhere!

This phase of work started on a Friday night after a lift was rented for the weekend. The metal beam in the center of the building was covered with wood, all windows were caulked, and everything was primed.
As many have already noticed, we have done a major overhaul on the front of our building. The top half of the building isn't going to change much, except for some paint around the windows, a good pressure washing, and a broken window replaced. Since we like to keep things as close to original as we can (somewhat), we decided not to paint the brick. So work on the bottom half began early winter (the absolute best time to work on exteriors, right?)

Even though it had been previously decided to replace the large glass on the front display windows (with smaller pieces that fit with our look and easier to replace if needed), it was a definite after accidentally breaking a window anyway!

So, the windows came out and the front had to be completely rebuilt to achieve the look we wanted. It was quite a scary moment for us (and the on-lookers driving by too, I'm sure)!
Work had to move inside for a while, but plans include to cover the steel beam above the transom windows, paint the top windows with an accent color, and add lighting somewhere. At least for now it is not an eye sore to those driving by anymore, but something actually pleasing to see!

More progress is happening inside now and we can't wait to share it! Also, after exploring underneath, we have some awesome antique finds to share! Thanks for checking us out!

To fully appreciate our final product, I think it is important to see what we started with from the beginning. After the antique store was cleared out, and we held a few yard sales of our own to clean out the upstairs, we finally had some open space to work.

nearly every small town and community had at least one “opera house.” Today we think of an opera house as a place
where people wear their tuxedos and nice dresses to listen to people sing songs
we can’t understand. But in the
Victorian era of the late 1800s and early 1900s, the small-town opera house was
more of a community gathering place to watch all manner of productions. It was a place where traveling vaudeville
acts would come through and perform for the townspeople. It was a place where plays and recitals and
any form of live entertainment could be found.

Humboldt in the late 1880s was a small, but growing town of
about 1300 people. There were two
business districts – the Crossing and the <st1:street w:st="on">Main Street</st1:street> downtown we know today. In 1887 there were about 25 businesses
located in the three blocks of downtown <st1:street w:st="on">Main Street</st1:street> from <st1:street w:st="on">Webster Street</st1:street> (present-day <st1:street w:st="on">12th Avenue</st1:street>)
to <st1:street w:st="on">Plumb Street</st1:street>
(present-day <st1:street w:st="on">Central Avenue</st1:street>). O.C. Sharp was a successful businessman in
town with a thriving dry goods store on <st1:street w:st="on">Main Street</st1:street>. He had a new, much larger, dry goods store
constructed in the middle of district in 1888, between Gillespie Street (13th
Ave.) and Green Street (14th Ave.) on the north side of Main
Street (our current building).

As opera houses were popular in this Victorian era, Mr.
Sharp housed a large dry goods store on the first floor of his new building and
made the second floor Sharp’s Hall, an opera house. Early trade publications stated the opera
house was a “splendid place for amusements” that could seat 500. It had a large stage for performing and
access directly from the sidewalk via a stairwell on the west side of the
building. The building was heated with
coal stoves and used coal oil lamps for light.

The Sanborn fire insurance maps give lots of clues to the
changes in these old buildings from the 1880s through the 1940s. According to the maps, we can tell this much…

Its days as an opera house were short-lived. By the time the 20th Century
rolled around, the maps show our building as a dry goods store and millinery,
which is a place that makes and/or sells women’s hats. Between 1900 and 1905, the store changed back
to a dry goods and clothing store.
Sometime between 1910 and 1915, the store began selling shoes along with
dry goods and clothing, and an addition was completed on the back of the store. In the 1920s through at least 1947, the
second floor was open to the first floor with a catwalk balcony around the
outside walls of the upstairs.

We’re not sure of the dates for the changes in ownership
over the years, and we welcome anyone to comment on our history to fill in the
blanks for us. It appears it was O.C.
Sharp’s Dry Goods store from 1888 until the early 1920s. Next came Thweatt Brothers Dry Goods Store
from the 1920s until the late 40s or early 50s.
That was followed by The Black & White Store in the 50s and early
60s, which was a popular department store.
The Black & White Store was replaced by Shainberg’s. This is the point where we need some help
filling in the timeline. We know someone
bought and opened a store in 1980, then in 1987, L.P. Robbins bought it and
opened Robbins’ Nest Antiques. We’re not
sure of the history from the mid-60s to 1987.

If anybody else knows anything about the building or has pictures, we would love to hear about it. So far we have heard great memories of people shopping there when they were kids or getting to put their money on the wires to go up to the cash registers on the mezzanine level at the Black and White Store. We love hearing the stories so feel free to comment below and tell us all about it!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2130529679976856277.post-72313144182717877932013-01-26T05:52:00.000-08:002013-01-26T05:52:34.767-08:00Who Are We?Who are these crazy people behind this big project? Friends for many years now, our friendship took a new path when we decided to become business partners and become "married" in this project. While signing papers and putting our names together on checking accounts, insurance, and bank papers, we looked at each other and said, "Well, this is it...we are in it for the long haul now!" Since Williams and Bundy Properties was created almost a year ago, we have tackled many decisions and handled it well, in our opinion anyway.
Jocelyn

As a banker for the Bank of Humboldt, Jocelyn is well-versed in all things financial which leads her to be our money guru for our business. She stays on top of our spending and lets us know what needs to be done and when things need to be paid, etc. Her books are immaculate, but be forewarned, if you don't turn in a receipt, you are on the hot seat! Jocelyn is a graduate of Humboldt City Schools and supports her hometown tirelessly. You can find her involved with many Chamber activities, Strawberry Festival, school functions, the HHS Alumni Association, her church, and too many more to name. Perhaps her greatest and most rewarding activity as of late is taking care of her 3 beautiful children, one of which was just born in December. As a go-getter Jocelyn makes things happen for us and we wouldn't be where we are today without her.
Eric

Having grown up in the D.C. area, Eric is a recent (and I mean, in the last 10 years) newcomer to our little town, but supports it like it is his own. Loving his wife Jocelyn and her support for Humboldt may have something to do with it, but he has definitely made his place here and the community is better for it. As an Information Systems guy for West Tennessee Healthcare, Eric knows a little about everything. He is very knowledgeable on just about anything and if he doesn't know about something, then his Google app is not far away from being used. Eric is our sounding board for everything practical. If an opinion meets his approval, then it will probably get done. And did I mention Eric is a work horse? This guy is fearless (as is evident in his acrobatics on a scaffold) and he doesn't mind getting his hands dirty. Since we have a ton of demolition work, restructuring work, lots of clean up, new construction, painting, refinishing, and heavy lifting, among many other things that have to be done on the building, we are very lucky to have Eric Bundy on our side!
Jessica

As a Humboldt native as well, Jessica is thrilled to be a part of something new and exciting for her hometown. Currently a recruiter for Personnel Placements in Jackson, she has held many marketing and creative roles, so she felt comfortable handling the marketing and the face of the business. In her spare time (what spare time, right?), she is active in the Jackson Exchange Club and serves on the Board of Directors for the West Tennessee Regional Art Center in Humboldt. Although not professional, she dabbles in creative design and photography and helped create the logo for the Opera House. As a lover of planning all types of events, she would love to take this new found opportunity to help clients plan special occasions in the building. The focus now though is to just get it open. So when she isn't caring for her two precious daughters, she might can be seen busting up some plaster on an occasional Saturday or at least stopping by to give her opinion on the way something looks.
Lee

Project manager may be Lee's current title at TDOT, but he might as well take that title for this venture as well. Having restored 3 older homes and doing most of the work himself on those homes, he knows a thing or two about hard work, old structures, and what it takes to get things done. As an engineer, Lee is our structural guy and along with Eric has designed and laid out the store front of our building, which has been completely rebuilt in the past 2 months. He can give the rest of us a yes or no answer on whether the things we dream up in our head that we want for the building can be done or not. His plate is pretty full now with being the Humboldt Chamber Board President, the Vice-Chairman for the Humboldt City School Board, and the President of the HHS Alumni Association, but after he dedicates time to being "Daddy", he is constantly thinking about this building. Being from Humboldt as well, Lee is one of the best promoters and supporters of Humboldt (maybe 2nd to Jocelyn). This business venture only expands on that!

So this is us in a nutshell! We not only want to start a business and succeed, but make a difference in our hometown. If all we get out of this is adding something of worth to the already beautiful downtown Humboldt, then we will be proud!

Thanks for checking us out! Let's jump right in...

The Opera House Event Hall is going to be a premier venue for any and all events that are special in your life. It is located in a historic building at 1313 Main Street right in the middle of downtown Humboldt, Tennessee. Previously positioned as many different retail stores and an actual opera house in the past (hence the name), its wide open spaces are perfect for holding events for 10 - 300 people. This best part is that you can actually keep them all in the same room!

As a two-story building, the bottom floor will be the main event hall with a beautiful entrance and large windows that can allow a lot of natural light for daytime events. Large chandeliers will hang down the center of the exposed ceiling to enhance the lighting for any time of day or night. Original hardwood floors will be refinished and brick walls will be exposed to create a perfect canvas for decorating in any style for any event.

A mezzanine level that overlooks the bottom floor is being opened up and a beautiful stairway will be installed to access that level from the main floor. This area can serve as extra space for guests, a place to set-up a bar or DJ, or whatever our hosts have in mind.

Our second floor is most famous for the large, and I do mean large, windows that overlook Main Street. This area needed a little maintenance work structurally to secure the support of the roof. With this added support came additional columns down the center of the space. While it is not as open as the bottom floor, it is still a large space and can hold plenty of people. Our thoughts were that this space could serve as an overflow area to a party downstairs and offer more of a lounging space. This area will come with sofas, chairs, its own small kitchen, and multiple ways to arrange the room. We see this area as a space for smaller, more quaint parties such as baby showers, bridal showers, birthday parties, or even book club meetings. This could also serve as a bridal loft for the preparation of the bride and her party if the wedding were to take place in the building.

A catering prep area and mens and women's bathrooms will also be downstairs.

Taken after we bought the building

There will be so many options for how things can be set up and that is what makes us most excited about our adventure. We can see weddings, receptions, birthday/anniversary parties, reunions, fundraisers, business meetings, wedding/baby showers...basically anything you can dream up, we see it happening here. There will be no need to seek out venues in other cities anymore!

Since our building had been in disrepair for many, many years, we have a lot of work to do to get it to the vision we see in our heads. It is a big job, but we are dedicated and driven to make this happen. So, follow us, keep in touch and watch our dream become a reality...this year!
